Magnetic therapy not ruled by evidence

"The FDA regulates specific claims of medical efficacy, but in general static magnetic fields are viewed as safe," notes Thomas Skalak, professor and chairman of Biomedical engineering at University of Virginia. He, along with Cassandra Morris, a former Ph.D. student in Biomedical engineering, began investigative work on the effect of magnets on human blood flow. Basically, this research was aimed at testing a few companies' advertisement that magnetic therapy helped increase blood circulation.
Research process
Their research was done on laboratory rats; they placed magnets of 70 Millitesla (mT) magnetic field strength close to the rats' blood vessels. The blood vessels were measured before and after their exposure to Static Magnetic Fields (SMF). Skalak and Morris found that the vessels that had been constricted became dilated and vice versa. This proved that magnets are capable of causing relaxation in blood vessels with reduced blood supply thereby increasing the blood flow. As dilated vessels are also likely to become constricted due to the SMF, inflammation that is generally caused by a dilatation of blood vessels is reduced considerably, thus proving the beneficial effects of magnetic therapy.
Recent research
Their latest research involved anesthetized rats, the hind paws of which were injected with inflammatory agents that injured the tissues. Magnetic therapy was immediately applied to the injured part. The results showed that swelling due to tissue injury could be reduced by static magnets provided this was done immediately. This study was published in the November 2007 issue of the American Journal of Physiology.

The above study proves beyond doubt the efficacy of magnets in reducing tissue trauma. It also shows that if further advanced studies are conducted in the field of magnetic therapy, there is likely to be a more positive attitude among the masses towards this form of alternative medicine.
